Randall Wakelam


Randall Wakelam has had a varied military and academic career which began in 1969 as a Reserve musician. After graduating from the Royal Military College he flew helicopters for the Army, serving in three different squadrons before commanding 408 Tactical Helicopter Squadron from 1991 to 1993.

He subsequently served as a member of faculty and administrator both at the Canadian Forces College in Toronto and at the Canadian Defence Academy Headquarters in Kingston. While in uniform he taught a variety of courses including leadership, air warfare, and operational planning.  Additionally he led the development of the suite of senior officer professional and academic courses taught at the Staff College beginning in 2008.

In November 2009 Dr Wakelam joined the faculty of the Royal Military College of Canada where he is a member of the History department.  He teaches a range of courses, both undergraduate and graduate, with a focus on air warfare, military history and leadership.

In 2009 he published The Science of Bombing: Operational Research in RAF Bomber Command and in 2010 co-edited The Report of the Officer Development Board: Maj-Gen Roger Rowley and the Education of the Canadian Forces. In late 2011 he will be publishing Cold War Fighters: Canadian Aircraft Procurement 1945-54. He is currently beginning work on a biography of Air Marshal Wilfred Curtis who served as Canada’s Chief of the Air Staff from 1947 to 1953.Randall.Wakelam@rmc.ca
